Arthur Gottschalk
1st Prize


Arthur Gottschalk, Professor of Music Theory and Composition and Chair of the Department of Music Theory and Composition at Rice University, is the recipient of the 1st Prize in this year's competition.

His composition, Fakebook II, was selected for the top prize by our international panel of adjudicators: Brian Hanke (pianist/composer; Founder, music+culture), Robert Kenchington (music journalist; Gramophone, BBC Music Magazine and The Good CD Guide) and Dr. Kanae Matsumoto (pianist; UCLA and Santa Monica College).

Thomas Schwan
2nd Prize


Italian-American composer Thomas Schwan was awarded our 2nd Prize for his Cinque Preludi.

Mr. Schwan studied piano and composition at the Conservatories of Vicenza, Turin and Milan and has concertized as a pianist in the United States, Italy and Russia. His compositions have been featured in plays and documentary films and have been performed in concert in Italy and United States.

Thomas Wally
3rd Prize


Austrian composer Thomas Wally is the recipient of our 3rd Prize for his piano work impressions... en relief.

Mr. Wally holds a diploma in composition from the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna, Austria. His works have been performed by the Ensemble Plus in Bregenz, the Kammermusik-Festival Bad Ischl, and by members of the London Contemporary Opera.

He is cofounder of the contemporary music ensemble LUX, and in 2005 was a finalist in the Jeunesses Musical Composition Competition Bukarest.
